AFP reported today on the hanging of the drug trafficker this morning and included what one of the sons said:
"He's in the wrong, but killing him is not the correct decision. Only God can give life and take life," Gopalan told AFP last week."
"Please give him a chance... give him 20 years, 30 years (in jail)."
What more can I say? The death penalty is simply cruel, inhumane and degrading. As a civilized society, we need to move away from it.

That's an interesting statement.
Can I assume that you believe that there is a God who created man; hence you believe that only He can take life.
But wait a minute. If only God can take life, does that mean that if you were take another person's life, i.e. commit murder, then God would require that you forfeit your own life?
Anyway, there is no need for you and I to speculate on what this God thinks. He left us a book spelling out clearly His thoughts on this matter; and this is what He says;
"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man". (Genesis Chap 9, verse6)
So if you murder someone, the society in which you live is empowered by God to take your life. This is called Law. It is not barbaric, it is Justice.
You are right - only God can take life.
